چکیده

Abstract Side scan sonar is a common tool for seafloor imaging and surveying due its efficiency high resolution. The backscatter information from side enables to identify sediment types seabed roughness, often used study dynamics. Theory suggests that can be correlated the geotechnical properties of surface. This could enhance prediction erodibility characterization, considering offer large spatial coverage in short time. In this study, high-frequency (1000 kHz) data, samples, in-situ strength profiles were collected surface at ten locations. Statistical analysis data compared with showed trends between mean backscatter, soil strength, textural properties. Generally, increased when grain size water content fines decreased. However, roughness bedforms, presence oysters, shell hash as well variations (i.e., porosity) heavily influenced sometimes masked any relationships directly.

Correlation of sidescan backscatter with grain size distribution of surficial seabed sediments

The dependence of acoustic backscatter on sediment grain size distribution is examined using dual frequency (100 and 410 kHz) sidescan sonar and 22 sediment grab samples from the Loch Linnhe artificial reef site on the west coast of Scotland. The sidescan data were processed to remove an empirically estimated average grazing angle dependence on backscatter. The processed data were analysed by f...

A New Radiometric Correction Method for Side-Scan Sonar Images in Consideration of Seabed Sediment Variation

Affected by the residual of time varying gain, beam patterns, angular responses, and sonar altitude variations, radiometric distortion degrades the quality of side-scan sonar images and seriously affects the application of these images. However, existing methods cannot correct distortion effectively, especially in the presence of seabed sediment variation. This study proposes a new radiometric ...

Side-scan Sonar for Inspecting Coastal Structures

INTRODUCTION: SSS has been used to map the sea bottom and search for submerged objects since the 1960's (Fleming, 1976). Recent experiments by CERC and the Buffalo District have shown SSS to be useful for inspecting both sloping coastal structures (i.e., rubble-mound jetties and breakwaters) and vertical-wall structures (i.e., concrete caissons and timber cribs). SSS is an adaptation of high-fr...

Remote estimation of surficial seafloor properties through the application Angular Range Analysis to multibeam sonar data

The variation of the backscatter strength with the angle of incidence is an intrinsic property of the seafloor, which can be used in methods for acoustic seafloor characterization. Although multibeam sonars acquire backscatter over a wide range of incidence angles, the angular information is normally neglected during standard backscatter processing and mosaicking. An approach called Angular Ran...
